Executive MBA for Engineers and IT Professionals: Best Programmes, Eligibility and Fees
Key takeaways
- Blended or evening MBAs (IIMA BPGP, IIMK EPGP, IIT Delhi EMBA) keep your salary running but come without placements.
- For consulting or an industry switch, a one-year full-time MBA with a placement process (IIMA PGPX, ISB PGP) is the stronger reset.
- Fees run from ₹7.6 lakh (IIM Indore EPGDPM&AI, a diploma) to ₹42 lakh (IIT Bombay–WashU); blended IIM/IIT MBAs cluster at ₹16.75–21 lakh.
Engineers make the best MBA students and the most reluctant ones. They already earn well, they already solve hard problems, and they hate paying ₹20 lakh to be told what a Gantt chart is.
Yet half of India’s flagship MBA classrooms are full of them. The question is not whether an MBA is good for engineers. It is which format moves you from shipping code or running a site to running the business, without quitting the job that pays the EMI.
The best MBA for engineers and IT professionals depends on whether you can leave your job. If you can’t, a blended or evening executive MBA (IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended MBA in Business Analytics and AI, IIM Kozhikode EPGP, IIT Delhi’s Executive MBA) keeps your salary running but comes without placements. If you want a clean switch into consulting or a new industry, a one-year full-time programme with a placement process (IIMA PGPX, ISB PGP) is the stronger reset.

Which MBA for Engineers: Decision Table by Experience and Goal
Ranking these programmes in one list would be lazy. A 27-year-old developer with four years in and a 38-year-old plant head need different things. Find your row: years of full-time experience, then the move you actually want.
Four goals cover most engineers. Tech to management means engineering manager, delivery head or plant leadership in your current industry. Product means product manager or product leader. Consulting means a strategy or management consulting firm. Switch industry means leaving IT or core engineering for BFSI, energy, a startup or another sector.

Three things to read off this table. First, every row that says “switch” or “consulting” lands on a full-time programme, because those are the only ones with a placement process. Second, 3–5 years is early for most executive programmes: IIMA’s BPGP lists an average of 8–9 years of experience and an average age of 32, so you would be among the most junior in the room. Third, at 10–15 years PGPX is still open (no upper limit is published), but its 2026–27 batch averaged 7 years 6 months, so you would sit above the class average.
If your band is the deciding factor, Executive MBA for Early-Career Professionals (2–5 Years): Best Programmes, Eligibility and Fees and Executive MBA for Mid-Career Managers (8–15 Years): Best Programmes, Eligibility and Fees go deeper on each.
MBA for Engineers: Best Programmes
Engineering careers have a ceiling that isn’t about skill. Somewhere between year five and year ten, the next promotion stops being “build it better” and starts being “decide what to build, who builds it, and what it costs”. That’s a business job wearing a technical badge.
The usual transitions an engineer buys an MBA for:
- Tech lead to engineering manager: budgeting, hiring, vendor contracts and stakeholder politics. Most of this is learnable on the job, but an MBA compresses it and gives you the vocabulary finance and sales already speak.
- Developer or analyst to product manager: pricing, market sizing, customer research and P&L thinking. This is where an analytics-heavy programme earns its fee.
- Engineer to consulting: the hardest switch from a part-time programme. Consulting firms recruit from full-time campuses, so this is the one case where PGPX or ISB usually wins.
- Core engineering to business roles: civil, mechanical and chemical engineers moving into project finance, operations strategy, supply chain or business development.
The common thread: you’re not short of intelligence. You’re short of a credential that tells a hiring manager you can be trusted with money and people, and a network outside your own function.
Who Engineers Sit Next to in Class
- ISB PGP, Class of 2026: 54% of the 826-student class majored in engineering as undergraduates, with about four years of average work experience (range 2–17 years), per GMAC’s class profile.
- IIMA PGPX, 2026–27 (21st batch): 160 participants with an average 7 years 6 months of experience. IIMA lists BFSI, Consulting and Energy and Utilities as the largest sectors (22 students each), followed by IT & ITeS (15), Manufacturing/Engineering (14) and IT Products (9). IIMA describes the academic mix as “both engineering and non-engineering backgrounds” but has not published a percentage.
- IIMK EPGP-18: average work experience of 8+ years and 29% women, per IIMK’s admissions page.
Engineers are the majority culture in Indian MBA classrooms, so “engineer” is not a differentiator in your application. Your domain, your outcomes and your story for the switch are.
Analytics and AI MBAs for Engineers Compared
Most engineers searching for an MBA are really asking: which one teaches me the business side without making me sit through Excel 101? The analytics- and AI-heavy options sit next to the general-management ones below, with the full-time pair for switchers.
| Programme | Award | Format | Duration | Total fee ₹ | Analytics / AI depth | Campus visits | Placement support | Alumni status | Source + date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIMA BPGP: BA & AI | MBA degree | Live online, 6:30–9:30 pm Thu/Fri/Sat + Sunday morning | 2 years | ₹21,00,000 (2027–29), travel extra | Built around analytics and AI; 16 core, 18 elective and 2 project credits, case method | One campus week each term | No placement process listed | IIMA alumni status for graduates | IIMA admission page and brochure, Oct 2026 |
| IIM Indore EPGDPM&AI | Executive PG diploma | Online, twice a week (generally weekends); delivered with TimesPro | 15 months | ₹7,60,000 (Batch 05) | Mixes machine learning with management and strategy | 8 campus days | Not stated on the programme page | Not stated on the programme page | iimidr.ac.in, Oct 2026 |
| IIMK EPGP | MBA degree | Live sessions from TimesPro classroom centres; no home login | 2 years | ₹16,75,000 + ₹12,000 (EPGP-19) | General management; analytics through electives | 3 × six-day modules | No: “a formal placement assistance scheme is not part of this programme” | IIMK alumni “upon successful completion” | IIMK admission policy and FAQ, Oct 2026 |
| IIT Delhi EMBA | MBA, IIT Delhi | Evenings on campus from 6:15 pm | 2 years | ₹18,00,000 (2026–28) | General management at a technology institute | Classes are on campus | Not stated on the programme page | Not stated on the programme page | dms.iitd.ac.in, Oct 2026 |
| IIT Bombay–WashU EMBA | Dual EMBA | Mumbai, Thursday morning to Sunday evening, 4 days a month | 18 months | ₹42,00,000 (no additional GST) | General management for senior professionals | Monthly blocks + St. Louis capstone | Not stated on the programme page | Not stated on the programme page | olin.washu.edu, Oct 2026 |
| IIMA PGPX (switchers) | MBA degree | Residential | 1 year | ₹36,20,000 (2027–28) + immersion | General management with electives | Full-time on campus | Yes: median fixed salary ₹32.16 lakh, Class of 2026, IPRS-audited | Not published | IIMA PGPX Finals 2026 IPRS report, Jul 2026 |
| ISB PGP (switchers) | PGP, not a degree | Residential | 1 year | ₹40,46,520 incl. GST (2027–28) | General management with electives | Full-time on campus | Yes: campus placement process | Not published | ISB fee structure 2027–28, Oct 2026 |
The honest summary: only IIMA’s BPGP is an MBA degree built around analytics and AI from the first term. IIM Indore’s EPGDPM&AI teaches similar ground at about a third of the price, but it is a diploma. The rest are general-management MBAs where analytics is an elective track. More options in Executive MBA in Business Analytics and AI: Colleges, Fees and Eligibility and IIM Executive Programmes in Business Analytics and AI.

Executive MBA for IT Professionals
IT is the cleanest fit for analytics- and AI-led programmes. If your goal is product management or data leadership, IIMA’s BPGP or IIM Indore’s EPGDPM&AI teaches strategy alongside tools you already half-know. If your goal is consulting, look at full-time campuses instead.
Three things IT professionals in particular should check:
- Your release calendar against the class calendar. BPGP’s live sessions run Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. If your team’s deploys or on-call rotations land on those evenings, the clash shows up every week, not once a term.
- Whether you can log in from home. IIMK’s EPGP runs from TimesPro classroom centres, not your laptop. If you work from a client site or move cities with projects, a fixed centre is a real constraint.
- Your employer’s education policy and bond. Large IT services firms and product companies often have sponsorship policies. Read the bond clause before you sign it, since a two-year bond can cost more than the fee if you want to switch.
For IT-specific specialisations, see Executive MBA in Information Technology: Colleges, Fees and Eligibility. For product roles specifically, Best IIM and Top B-School Programmes for Product Managers lists the options.
Executive MBA Time Cost Alongside a Tech Job
Engineers tend to underestimate this part. The programme you can finish matters more than the one that looks best on paper. Here is the time each one asks for, in numbers.
| Programme | Live class schedule | Campus time | Weekdays of leave (est.) | Source + date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIMA BPGP: BA & AI | Two sessions each on Thu, Fri, Sat evenings (6:30–9:30 pm) + two on Sunday morning; 900 contact hours in all | One campus week each term | About 5 per campus week | IIMA BPGP brochure, Oct 2026 |
| IIMK EPGP | Live sessions at a TimesPro classroom centre across seven quarters | 3 × six-day modules = 18 days | Up to 18, fewer where a module spans a weekend | IIMK FAQ and admission policy, Oct 2026 |
| IIM Indore EPGDPM&AI | Twice a week, generally weekends | 8 campus days | Up to 8 | iimidr.ac.in, Oct 2026 |
| IIT Delhi EMBA | Evening classes on campus from 6:15 pm | All classes are on campus | None, but you leave office early on class days | dms.iitd.ac.in, Oct 2026 |
| IIT Bombay–WashU EMBA | Thursday morning to Sunday evening, 4 days a month | About 72 days if a block runs every month for 18 months, plus the St. Louis capstone | About 36 (two weekdays a month × 18) | olin.washu.edu, Oct 2026 |
| IIMA PGPX / ISB PGP | Full-time | 12 months residential | You resign: 12 months of salary forgone | IIMA and ISB programme pages, Oct 2026 |
What 900 Contact Hours Means Per Week
BPGP’s 900 contact hours over two years (about 104 weeks) average out to roughly 8.7 hours a week. The evening schedule alone is 9 hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, before Sunday morning. Add reading, cases and group work at one hour for every hour in class (our assumption, not IIMA’s) and you are near 17 hours a week. That is a second part-time job, for two years, on top of a 45-hour week.
For the classroom-centre format, add travel. If your nearest centre is 45 minutes away, each session day costs an extra 1.5 hours on the road.
Time Management Alongside a Tech Job
- Negotiate before you enrol, not after. Tell your manager which evenings or weekends are blocked. Release weeks, on-call rotations and quarter-end are where executive MBA students drop courses.
- Block campus dates in your leave plan the day you get the calendar. IIM Indore lists eight campus days; IIMK runs three six-day modules. Together with a family event or two, that is most of a year’s leave.
- Treat group work like a sprint. Fix one weekly sync, assign owners, ship early.
- Use your day job as live case material. Pricing, vendor and capacity decisions at work make the coursework faster and the learning stick.
Class days and campus calendars for more programmes are in Executive MBA Duration, Class Schedule and Campus Visits.
MBA After Mechanical or Civil Engineering
Every programme in this guide accepts a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, so a BE or B.Tech in mechanical, civil or chemical engineering qualifies. What changes by branch is the industry you’re heading into and the electives that matter.
MBA After Mechanical Engineering
Manufacturing, automotive and energy companies promote mechanical engineers into plant leadership, supply chain and operations strategy. PGPX’s 2026–27 batch has 14 participants from Manufacturing/Engineering and 22 from Energy and Utilities, so the network exists. Choose a programme with depth in operations and supply chain electives; see Executive MBA in Operations: Colleges, Fees and Eligibility and Executive MBA in Supply Chain and Logistics: Colleges, Fees and Eligibility.
MBA After Civil Engineering
Infrastructure, real estate and EPC firms need people who understand both drawings and cash flows. Civil engineers typically aim at project management, contracts, project finance and business development. A general-management programme with strong operations and finance (IIMK EPGP, IIT Delhi EMBA) fits better than an AI-heavy one. Executive MBA in Project Management: Colleges, Fees and Eligibility covers the project-led options.
MBA After Chemical Engineering
Process industries, oil and gas, and specialty chemicals reward chemical engineers who can talk margins and capex. Energy and Utilities is one of PGPX’s three largest sectors in the 2026–27 batch.
MBA Eligibility Notes for Engineers
Good news first: a B.Tech or BE is welcome everywhere. The fine print is in the percentages and the experience clocks.
- Four-year degree advantage at IIMA BPGP: a 4-year BE/B.Tech graduate needs only 2 years of full-time experience (as on 31 March 2027), against 3 years for a 3-year graduate. Minimum 50% aggregate. Details in IIM Ahmedabad Blended MBA in Business Analytics and AI Eligibility.
- IIT Delhi asks for 60% in your bachelor’s (55% for SC/ST/PH) plus 3 years of work. Engineers with a weak final-year CGPA should check this first; see IIT Delhi Executive MBA Eligibility.
- IIMK counts experience in days: 1,095 days after graduation, as on the closing date of each application phase. Internships and pre-graduation work don’t count.
- PGPX wants 4 years after graduation as on 31 March 2027, a minimum age of 25 and a centre-based GMAT or GRE. Online take-home scores aren’t accepted. See IIM Ahmedabad PGPX (One-Year MBA) Eligibility.
- Tests: IIMA BPGP and IIMK accept CAT, GMAT or GRE, or run their own test. IIT Delhi and IIM Indore run their own selection. Engineers usually find quant the easy part; the verbal and reading sections are where scores leak. More in Executive MBA Entrance Test and Score.
Executive MBA Fees and ROI for Engineers
Fees run from ₹7.6 lakh (IIM Indore EPGDPM&AI) to ₹42 lakh (IIT Bombay–WashU). The blended and evening IIM/IIT MBAs cluster between ₹16.75 lakh and ₹21 lakh. Full-time one-year programmes cost more and also cost you a year’s salary.
Fee as Months of Your Salary
The fastest sanity check is to express the fee in months of your current CTC. Full-time rows add 12 months of salary forgone.
| Programme | Total fee ₹ | At ₹15 lakh CTC | At ₹25 lakh CTC | At ₹40 lakh CTC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Indore EPGDPM&AI | ₹7,60,000 | 6.1 months | 3.6 months | 2.3 months |
| IIMK EPGP | ₹16,87,000 | 13.5 months | 8.1 months | 5.1 months |
| IIT Delhi EMBA | ₹18,00,000 | 14.4 months | 8.6 months | 5.4 months |
| IIMA BPGP: BA & AI | ₹21,00,000 | 16.8 months | 10.1 months | 6.3 months |
| IIT Bombay–WashU EMBA | ₹42,00,000 | 33.6 months | 20.2 months | 12.6 months |
| IIMA PGPX (fee + 12 months’ salary) | ₹36,20,000 | 29.0 + 12 = 41.0 months | 17.4 + 12 = 29.4 months | 10.9 + 12 = 22.9 months |
| ISB PGP (fee + 12 months’ salary) | ₹40,46,520 | 32.4 + 12 = 44.4 months | 19.4 + 12 = 31.4 months | 12.1 + 12 = 24.1 months |
Fees exclude campus travel and stay. Arithmetic: fee ÷ (annual CTC ÷ 12). Full fee breakdowns are in Executive MBA Fees.
- Instalments: IIMA BPGP collects ₹21 lakh in a ₹1 lakh commitment fee plus six instalments through November 2028. IIMK splits ₹16.75 lakh across seven instalments. IIM Indore collects four instalments of ₹1.9 lakh.
- Loans: IIMA lists Bank of Baroda, Axis Bank, Punjab National Bank and IDFC First Bank as lenders for BPGP. Ask about moratorium terms, since you’ll be repaying from salary. See Executive MBA Scholarships, Loans and EMI.
- Hidden costs: campus travel and stay for blended programmes, international immersion at IIMK and PGPX, GST where it applies.
ROI Worked Example: ₹18 Lakh Software Engineer
Take a software engineer earning ₹18 lakh a year who does the IIMA Blended MBA while keeping the job. The numbers below are assumptions to show the arithmetic, not salary data. Plug your own into the EMBA ROI calculator sheet or use the Free Executive MBA Tools: ROI Calculator and Application Tracker.
| Assumption | Value |
|---|---|
| Current salary (CTC) | ₹18,00,000 |
| Programme fee (IIMA BPGP: BA & AI) | ₹21,00,000 |
| Travel and stay for campus modules (assumed) | ₹1,50,000 |
| Total cost | ₹22,50,000 |
| Annual raise with or without the MBA (assumed) | 8% |
| Salary after moving to a PM / engineering-manager role in year 3 (assumed) | ₹25,00,000 |
Without the MBA, 8% a year takes ₹18 lakh to ₹21.0 lakh in year 3 and ₹28.56 lakh in year 7. With the MBA, salary follows the same path for the two programme years, then jumps to ₹25 lakh in year 3 and grows at 8%.
| Year after graduating | Without MBA | With MBA | Gain | Cumulative gain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (career year 3) | ₹21.00 lakh | ₹25.00 lakh | ₹4.00 lakh | ₹4.00 lakh |
| 2 | ₹22.67 lakh | ₹27.00 lakh | ₹4.33 lakh | ₹8.33 lakh |
| 3 | ₹24.49 lakh | ₹29.16 lakh | ₹4.67 lakh | ₹13.00 lakh |
| 4 | ₹26.45 lakh | ₹31.49 lakh | ₹5.04 lakh | ₹18.05 lakh |
| 5 | ₹28.56 lakh | ₹34.01 lakh | ₹5.45 lakh | ₹23.49 lakh |
Payback: the ₹22.5 lakh cost is recovered pre-tax in roughly 58 months after graduating (₹18.05 lakh after four years, then ₹4.45 lakh of year five’s ₹5.45 lakh gain ≈ 9.8 months). Five-year pre-tax gain: about ₹1 lakh over cost.
The uncomfortable part: at a 30% tax rate, the ₹23.49 lakh gain is about ₹16.4 lakh in hand, so the MBA does not pay for itself within five years on a ₹7 lakh jump. Push the post-MBA salary to ₹28 lakh and the five-year pre-tax gain becomes about ₹41.1 lakh, with payback in roughly three years. The size of the role change, not the brand, decides the ROI.
Engineer Worries About an Executive MBA, Answered
Will an Online or Blended IIM MBA Help Me Move to Product Management or Consulting?
For product management, it can, mostly inside your own company or industry. A blended MBA gives you the business vocabulary and a credential at the moment you ask for the move; the switch itself still runs through an internal transfer or your own job search. For consulting, a blended MBA rarely does the job on its own. Consulting firms hire from campus placement processes, and IIMA’s BPGP brochure lists no placement process while IIMK says “a formal placement assistance scheme is not part of this programme.” If consulting is the goal, budget for PGPX or ISB.
No Placements: Is a ₹16–21 Lakh Executive MBA Still Worth It?
Only if you know where the return comes from before you pay. Without placements, the payoff is a promotion your employer was holding back for lack of an MBA, or an external move you find yourself. If neither is on the table, the fee-as-months table above is the honest price: 10 months of a ₹25 lakh salary for BPGP. Our Executive MBA Placements and Salary page lists which programmes have a placement process and which don’t.
MBA or a Product Management Certificate?
If the goal is one specific move, from engineer to product manager at your current company, a PM certificate plus one shipped product usually gets you there for a fraction of ₹21 lakh. The MBA earns its price later, when the next step is product leadership with P&L, pricing or general-management scope, where job posts often ask for an MBA. Compare the two in Executive MBA vs Certificate Programme: Differences in Eligibility, Fees, Format and Outcomes.
Degree or Certificate: What Does Each Programme Award?
Read the award line, not the marketing name. IIMA’s BPGP and PGPX and IIMK’s EPGP award MBA degrees. IIT Delhi awards an MBA. IIM Indore’s EPGDPM&AI is an executive PG diploma, and ISB states that its PGP is not a degree programme. If a future employer’s job post says “MBA required”, or you may apply for a government role, buy the degree. Full matrix in Executive MBA Degree Type, Recognition and Alumni Status.
The Desk’s take
Apply if you’re 5–10 years in, already doing half a manager’s job without the title, and your company or target employers ask for an MBA at the next level. Blended IIM programmes are the sweet spot: you keep the salary and get the alumni network.
Skip it if you only want to become a product manager at your current company. A product management certificate, an internal transfer and one shipped product will get you there for a fraction of ₹21 lakh. Same for engineering managers: many promotions need a track record of leading people, not a degree.
The catch nobody mentions: part-time programmes don’t come with placement support the way full-time campuses do. The switch is your job to engineer. If you need a recruiter to hand you a consulting offer, pay for PGPX or ISB and accept the year off.
And the diploma trap: IIM Indore’s EPGDPM&AI is good value, but it’s an executive diploma, not an MBA. If your next employer’s job post says “MBA required”, buy the MBA.
Who an executive MBA is not for
- Engineers under 3 years of experience: most programmes won’t admit you, and the ones that do will put you among the most junior in the class.
- Anyone who needs a placement process to switch into consulting or a new industry.
- People whose release calendars or on-call rotations can’t spare three evenings a week or a campus week each term.
- Deep technical specialists who want to stay technical: an M.Tech or certifications often pay better for less money.

FAQs
Can a civil engineer do an MBA?
Yes. Every programme in this guide accepts a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, so a BE or B.Tech in civil engineering qualifies. Civil engineers with 3+ years of work experience can apply to executive programmes such as IIM Kozhikode’s EPGP or IIT Delhi’s Executive MBA, where project management, finance and operations electives map well to infrastructure and real estate careers.
Can I do an MBA after mechanical engineering?
Yes. Mechanical engineering graduates are eligible for both full-time and executive MBAs. With 2 years’ experience after a four-year degree you meet IIMA’s Blended MBA requirement; with 4 years you can apply to PGPX. Pick the format based on whether you want to keep your current job.
Is an MBA good for mechanical engineers?
It is when you want to move into plant leadership, supply chain, operations strategy or business development, where decisions involve budgets and people more than design. It is less useful if you want to stay a deep technical specialist; there, an M.Tech or certifications often pay better for less money.
Which MBA is best for IT professionals?
For IT professionals who won’t quit, an analytics- or AI-focused blended programme such as IIMA’s Blended MBA in Business Analytics & AI is the strongest IIM option. For a lower-cost IIM credential, IIM Indore’s EPGDPM&AI costs ₹7.6 lakh but is a diploma. For a full career reset into consulting, a one-year full-time MBA like PGPX or ISB PGP fits better.
Is an executive MBA worth it for software engineers?
Only if it changes your role, not just your résumé. In the worked example above, a ₹7 lakh salary jump takes nearly five years to repay a ₹22.5 lakh cost pre-tax. A bigger jump into product, engineering management or business roles changes that maths sharply.

I have 3 years of tech experience at an IT services firm. Is it too early for an executive MBA?
You can get in, but you will be early. IIMK’s EPGP needs exactly 1,095 days of post-graduation experience, and IIMA’s BPGP needs 3 years, or only 2 if you hold a four-year BE or B.Tech. The catch is the class you’d join. BPGP lists an average of 8–9 years of experience and an average age of 32, so you would be among the most junior in the room. If you are considering a full-time switch, ISB PGP’s class averages about four years, which fits your band. PGPX opens at 4 years. If you want to grow where you are, a year or two more experience makes the executive classroom far more useful.
My company will sponsor my executive MBA but wants a two-year bond. Should I sign?
Sign only if you plan to stay. Large IT services and product companies often have sponsorship policies, and the bond is the price. Read the clause before you sign, because if you want to switch soon after graduating, buying your way out of a two-year bond can cost more than the fee. Sponsorship fits best when your goal is the internal route this format is built for: tech lead to engineering manager, or into a product or delivery role in the same company. If your real plan is an external move into consulting or a new industry, a bond works against you. That goal points to PGPX or ISB anyway.
Can I manage an executive MBA alongside on-call rotations and release weeks?
Only if you negotiate it before you enrol. IIMA’s BPGP runs live sessions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, plus Sunday morning. With reading and group work at an hour per class hour (our assumption), that comes to about 17 hours a week. IIT Delhi’s EMBA has evening classes on campus from 6:15 pm, so you leave office early on class days. IIMK’s EPGP runs at a fixed TimesPro centre, which is hard if you move between client sites. Tell your manager which evenings are blocked, and put campus weeks into your leave plan the day the calendar arrives.
Should I do an M.Tech or an MBA after my B.Tech?
It depends on whether you want to stay technical. If you want to remain a deep specialist, an M.Tech or certifications often pay better for less money than a ₹16–21 lakh MBA. An MBA earns its fee when your next step is a business job: engineering manager, product leader, plant head, project finance or business development. These are roles where decisions involve budgets and people more than design. Ask yourself which job you want in five years, then check whether its postings ask for an MBA.
My B.Tech percentage is low. Which executive MBA programmes can I still apply to?
Check the academic cut-off before anything else. IIT Delhi is the strictest of the programmes here: 60% in your bachelor’s (55% for SC/ST/PH), plus 3 years of work. IIMA’s Blended MBA asks for a 50% aggregate. IIMK’s EPGP also asks for 50%, with 45% for women and 40% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. IIMK will not let postgraduate marks make up for a shortfall in graduation marks. IIMA PGPX asks for a bachelor’s degree with 15 years of education, plus 4 years of experience and a test-centre GMAT or GRE. If you sit just under a cut-off, apply where you clearly qualify rather than hoping for an exception.
Should I take CAT, GMAT or GRE for an executive MBA as an engineer?
Choose by the programme you’re targeting, not the test. IIMA’s Blended MBA accepts CAT, GMAT or GRE, or its own admission test. IIMK’s EPGP accepts CAT, GMAT or GRE, or its own EMAT. IIMA PGPX and ISB PGP want GMAT or GRE, and PGPX accepts only test-centre scores, not at-home online ones. IIT Delhi and IIM Indore run their own selection, so neither needs a national test. Engineers usually find quant the easy part. Verbal and reading are where scores leak, so put most of your preparation time there, whichever test you choose.
